Hi Chicago Neighbors can you feel it? Summer is ending. One minute the kids are sprinting through sprinkler days, and the next we’re pulling backpacks off the shelf and double-checking the lunch schedule.

Summer may be wrapping up, but it’s also worth pausing for a second to appreciate something we don’t always say out loud enough: this has been a great 2026 summer. The kind that reminds you how fast time goes and how many good moments can fit into a few warm months.

Back to school isn’t just about paper assignments and new schedules. It’s about fresh starts, friendships, growing up a little, and making memories that stick around long after the seasons change.

What to Remember as Routines Begin Again

As summer fades, a few practical things can make the school year smoother (and safer) right from the start:

• Update keys & emergency contacts: Make sure your child’s contact info and pickup plan are current.

• Revisit home safety basics: Check smoke/CO detectors and keep pathways clear especially with kids moving in and out more.

• Review your “everyday” coverage needs: Summer activities might’ve meant new gear: sports equipment, laptops, tablets, bikes, tools for projects, worth keeping an eye on if anything was added this year.
